Western politicians say that individual consumers must change their lifestyles and use less energy. For many of us this makes sense. But the question arises, if the elites are abdicating their own responsibility to develop a new, cheap, clean and reliable energy supply. Most politicians are scared of investing in nuclear power, scared of moving ahead in carbon capture and storage, and scared of developing new, efficient biofuels – whether on the land or in the laboratory. They obviously fear serious interventions into the energy systems and seem to be scared of themselves and the future. James Woudhuysen’s latest book “Energise! A future for energy innovation” has led in the UK to controversial but healthy debates about what kind of energy mix we need. In his talk he will go beyond the questions of guilt and fear and outline ambitious but realistic scenarios toward cheap energy – and mobility – for all.
